As was pointed out to me after I made a similar comment this is actually a nod to the non-canonical Doctor Who with Peter Cushing. (In the movie he plays a human scientist who built the Tardis and leaves with his family to encounter multicolored Daleks that can still be thwarted by running up stairs or dodging behind a couch.) And I actually have seen that movie once, ages and ages ago. Gotta admit, that memory made me all of a sudden very fond of the new-rainbow-colored-jammy-dodger-cookie-scared-and-plastic-looking-Daleks.
