interesting read, especially the one about cosplay and racism

During the last weeks on LJ the German language has become a topic in fandom posts. One reason is the unbelievable bad German in Grimm. I watched 6 episodes recently and I'm suprised I didn't bleed from my ears ... I guess because their pronounciation is really bad and you often don't understand the gibberish that's supposed to be some arcane and ancient German word for a supernatural creature. The most fun are the words they invent on their official website. Like the incredible and unbelievable translation they came up with for "Queen Bee" = Mellischwuler! I'm constantly torn between being highly entertained by this sillyness and cringing & twitching in pain everytime they use one of those words on the show. I guess German has become the new Latin *sigh* I know German isn't one of the easiest languages around - even Mark Twain wrote about its complicated grammar. But are language consultants or proper translators that expensive or so hard to find in the States?

The other reson for German being discussed in posts is so nostalgic for me that it lead to a nice sunday spent with very old comics to find some pages to scan. Some might already guess it - we're talking X-Men fandom. Or more specific X-Men Movieverse fandom and fanfiction. It's nice to see that fic-writers are trying to put some German into their stories (because of Movie-Magnetos origin), but they seem to produce a lot of fail. I understand why readers find that annoying and their rants. You can ask the same question as I did above. Is it that hard to find a fanfic beta in fandom who speaks German? There are so many Germans and Austrian people in fandom!
But the strangest thing is they are complaining about the use of the word "Leibchen" :D When I read that I had the urge to jump in all the discussions and shout "hey are you sure it's not a hommage to the old Uncanny X-Men comics?" or "well, the scourcematerial is already bad". But then I stoped and realized that this is movie-fandom and a lot of the fans probably never read an issue of the comic.
So behold the tradition of bad German in X-men in two examples ^_^

Good night and thank you for reading. If you find a spelling or grammar mistake - you may keep it ;-)

*ROFL*

Usually you hear not much from the VC (/AR) fandom but a peculiar and questionable piece of news had the LJ-comms suddenly become chatty.

'We've been scrambling all week to confirm the following report, especially since it came from a very reliable source and is insanely logical considering the popularity of vampires these days. I guess something good has come from the success of Twilight as Bloody Disgusting has learned exclusively that Universal Pictures is looking to restart Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles, which tells the tale of the vampire Lestat Du Lioncort (through his narration), a nobleman-turned-vampire in the late 18th century. No word yet on how they plan on unrolling this franchise, but we did find out who they are talking with to replace Tom Cruise and Stuart Townsend.

We have confirmed this afternoon that ROBERT DOWNEY JR. is in close talks to play the vampire Lestat in Universal Pictures' The Vampire Chronicles, a newly rebooted franchise based on Anne Rice's popular novels.

Lestat appears as a major character in both motion picture adaptations of The Vampire Chronicles novels. In Neil Jordan's 1994 film adaptation of Interview with the Vampire, he is portrayed by Tom Cruise. In the 2002 film adaptation of Queen of the Damned, he is played by Stuart Townsend.

The Vampire Chronicles is a series of novels by Anne Rice that revolves around the fictional character Lestat de Lioncourt, a French nobleman made into a vampire in the 18th century.

Wooaahhh WHAT?????

[livejournal.com profile] scans_daily is gone???!!!??? I've been away for a few days and my favorite timekiller has gone from LJ. Can anyone fill me in on the details? (Except that entry from otw-news)

Thid community made me add a lot more series to my subriscriptions. That damn buisness made a lot more money becuase of this "advertisment" place. And Again Mr Ellis and all the other artists who commented and posted on that community gained a lot of esteem in my eyes.

EDIT

You could never read full issues there, only some pages to show the most interesting (in the posters opinion) part or some slashy subtext stuff. Plus some members posted scans from really old comics from pre-WWII and WWII. Ecxerpts from foreign (non US or UK) comics etc. For me, apart from usuall fandom-interaction, it was a place to learn about comics and the fandom itself. And of course as a non-US citzen I could browse though the new issues before they were shipped here. In the times of "global-village" we still get non-digital stuff with the usuall old delay. It was a "shopping-aid"!

Uuhh, and don't get me started on the gender issue ... :-(

For those of you who don't know this meaning of the word "slasher": slasher = serial killer in movies http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slasher

[livejournal.com profile] hiyami posted about an entry in [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes

[livejournal.com profile] seriousfic proposes his slasher movie (and gets metaquoted for it) :

It'll be called The Slasher. After a budding author posts her Harry Potter story to fanfiction.net, it's mercilessly roasted by fanficrants, badfic_quotes, everybody gets it on it. The out-of-character comms mock the characterization, the bad sex comms mock the sex scenes. It's the new My Immortal. The writer is so distraught that there's a post on her LJ from her brother saying she's committed suicide. Or... has she?

A year later, all the fen have gathered for a con when someone starts killing everyone that posted a bad review on her story. Moreover, the killer is using cliched plotbunnies from the dead (?) writer's webpage.

"I don't understand. Why did the bees sting her to death?"

"Maybe... because her lungs were full of sex pollen."

Comments are even more fun.

I would soo watch this film! :-) I wonder how that slasher would acomplish murder by tentacle-rape ^_^

EDIT: just read the full wki article and agree with one of the points made in the articles discussion. Saw, Hostel and some other films mentioned in one paragraph don't belong in that article. they are not "also considered" torture porn they ARE torture porn and nothing else. *shakes head* I don't watch those kind of horror films and even I know that. (torture porn I mean, a classic old slasher film can be fun ...) Hmmm, guess I'm so miffed about this paragraph because I despise torture porn like few other film genres. *shudders* I'm with Romero on this : "Influential director George A. Romero has stated, "I don’t get the torture porn films", "they're lacking metaphor."

I was in the mood for some vids and got lost on youtube.

Here's the SGA vid I told you about [livejournal.com profile] lexi599 Hadschi Halef Omar http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=GT8n4jYMNoY
All kinds of awesome this vid. Unfortunately you have to understand German and know both series (Stargate Atlantis and Karl Mays novels or the films) to fully appreaciate it.

Well I started to look for Doctor/Romana vids and found a few and other clips related to them. I think I'm alone on my flist shipping the two but here are the vids anyway. Get ready for Ten, Four, Nine, Romana I, Romana II and Donna ... oh and Duggan ^_^

Enjoy! )

The SGA vids are technically a lot better. Partly because of the way better material (much DW isn't available on DVD and its a lot older) and I guess the DW fandoms has ... well not so many good vidders. Although I bet there are some well done Ten/Rose vids ... but that s not really my thing.

I visited my parents last weekend and was lucky to have good weather. I went shopping (not much) in Bonn and picked up my comic subscription. And look what I found in the low price boxes: Béatrice Tillers "Fairy". The German publisher doesn't exist any more and it was never picked up by another publisher.cover photo ) And it only cost 2,99€ :-)
I also searched old stuff that I stock at my parents attic for old Star Trek fanzines that I want to lend to [livejournal.com profile] frogspace.old Trekkie memories ) Gods, that was a long time ago :-). The red one is a collection of the first SFC fanzines from 1982 to 1984 (I'm old, but not that old). I remember them to be an interesting read, like how fandom thought about the first Trek movies. One of the other SFCs fanzines contains an essay about the K/S discussion ^_^ (i. e. the publishing of the first K/S fanfics in the fanzines).
While uploading these pics from my mobile I noticed that I forgot to post these pics I took in July on my usual walking route in my parents village.

The world outside my window is coverd in snow. Seems I was too fast with replacing my winter default icon with a spring one on saturday. I should have known better. On friday I drove to friends for an afternoon of MERP gaming and the weather kept changing between hail, snow and rain. Which led to funny moments while gaming. Our group was searching the mountains between Ithilien and Mordor ... in winter. And the GM from time to time described landscape and weather and said "It's starts to snow." And we would look out of the window and comment" Yes, it does." or "No, it's raining now." :-)
But still I was surprised today to be woken by [livejournal.com profile] sashatwen saying that it was white outside. It was snowing big fluffy flakes while we had a long breakfast. But by lunchtime it had already started to melt away. And on my drive home I came through places completly free of snow. During the afternoon it started to snow again and now everything is covered by a thick layer of snow. I wonder how long it will stay.

Now to something completly different. Some days ago I was musing about that old poster saying "All I need to know about live I learned from Star Trek". Remember that one? And I tried to put up some lists about other series/films. Feel free to add things, some lists are a bit short. And I bet I forgott some things that should be on a list like this.
All I need to know about live ...
I learned from Doctor Who )

I learned from the X-Files )

I learned from Harry Potter  )

I learned from Ghostbusters )

I learned from HG2tG )

another meme poping up in LJ comic fandom

Give me a character from any fandom you know I am into and I will tell you:
a. My favorite thing about that character.
b. My least favorite thing about that character.
c. One person I would ship them with in their own verse.
d. One crossover ship for them I think would be neat.

Also still open for participation the 10 reasons for love or hate meme

I think [livejournal.com profile] lexi599 and [livejournal.com profile] sashatwen might find this interesting (of course others too ^_^)The (not so) mysterious ways of Russian-language Harry Potter Fandom (including a part about the history of LOTR translations in Russia) and part 2 of the article

Thanx to [livejournal.com profile] frogspace for the link.
