diekahvi: (classic who otp)
[no spoilers for current Doctor Who aka season 4]

I read the Doctor Who article in the April issue of DeathRay (one of the two sci-fi magazines that poped up after Dreamwatch became an online-only magazine) and they write that in the DVD commentary (3rd season) to "Last of the Time Lords" RTD calls the hand taking the ring "the hand of the Rani". Is that true???

THAT WOULD BE SO COOL!
I was always a bit at odds with the Doctor being now the last his of kind in the new series. On the one hand it gives the Doctor a great character development and a darker side. But on the other hand I miss Gallifrey.
I bet RTD just wanted to avoid using those cheesy old costumes. Fashion sense doesn't seem to be a major Time Lord trait ;-)
I would love a return of the Rani. (Hmmm Donna and her bitchfighting *smirks* LOL)
Maybe they brought back the master instead, because the Rani would cause a problem for "a kids show". It would create a kind of Adam & Eve situation. So would the return of Romana. Who, if the audio plays are not canon, might still be alive an well in E-space (another dimension). So it would be less, well, delicate if there are more survivors. (Although a "no survivors situation" would be perfect for the Doctor or the Rani to use that "I wouldn't make out with you if you were the last man/woman left on earth!" phrase ^_^)
I would love to see hints of more Time Lords and Ladys having survived. Yes, that would be a kind of retcon. But they already brought back lots and lots of Daleks.
I wasn't surprised that there was a Dalek survivor in the episode "Dalek". If there's a last Time Lord then why not a last dalek? But then hundreds of them show up. Sure they can multiply fast but apparently there were ways to escape the time war. So tehre could be Gallifreyan survivors...
And if I could make a wish for future seasons, I would love a child of former companion Leela and Commander Andred (a Gallifreyan) as new companion or recurring character.
As much as I love Romana, her return would be complicated. Something maybe better left in the realm of slash-fanfiction ;-)
And if some of the Time Lords return I hope he doesn't have to kill them again. That would be too dark and to extrme IMO. Logically that should lead the Doctor on the same psychological road as Vorenus in Rome - really dark madness and depression. So I hope that RTD never pulls out that plot for an episode ...
Although Time Lords make good villains, I quote the Doctor himself here:

From The Trial of a Time Lord 1
The Doctor : [To the Time Lords] "In all my travellings throughout the universe, I have battled against evil, against power-mad conspirators. I should have stayed here! The oldest civilisation, decadent, degenerate and rotten to the core! Power-mad conspirators, Daleks, Sontarans, Cybermen - they're still in the nursery compared to us! Ten million years of absolute power - that's what it takes to be really corrupt!"

But I would prefer if he would reason with them or appeal to their feelings instead of doing the Time Lord annihilation all over again.

BTW, loved Donna in 4.04 again. (SPOILERS for season 4) )

I've been rewatching Twin Peaks lately.
I'm delighted that I still like it, but I think that I won't buy it (I borrowed the DVD box froom a friend). It's not something I could watch often or have the craving to posses. I haven't watched the extras yet and I'm about halfway through the season (three episodes left to watch).
I think it aged well. Sure there's the late 80s fashion but apart from that it's still watchable.
Yet I wonder if the pilot would be as successful today as it was back then. On the one hand it's weirdness and the murder mysterycould still enthrall the viewers, so would an actor like Kyle MacLachlan. But while watching the pilot I realized again how slow paced storytelling was back then compared to now.

I didn't remember that the FBI agent (MacLachlan) was THAT weird and eccentric. And it shook my "suspension of disbelieve" a bit during the first two episodes that the Twin peaks sheriff so eagerly follwed his strange ideas. But now I'm enjoying it a lot.
Twin Peaks was the first work of David Lynch I ever saw. And now, after I saw Dune, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Mullholland Drive and a documentary about him, rewatching it is an interesting experience. The series has lots of "Lynch moments". The dream sequences, strange people and special places (or better special rooms). Audrey reminds me a lot of the female protagonist(s) in Mullholland Drive. I don't know if Lynch likes this kind of female characters. I need to rewatch Blue Velvet (it has been ages since I saw it) and finnally watch Lost Highway (missed it again on tv last month). Another thing Twin Peaks and Mullholland Drive have in common is the doppelgänger/double identity element.
I had to laugh when I saw who played the forensic whom MacLachlan requests from the FBI: Miguel Ferrer. He also played the head of forensics in Crossing Jordan. The clash of him and the sherrif of Twin Peaks is great :-) Very bizzare and funny. As is the psychologist in this series. I didn't remember that character. I also didn't remember that basically everyone in this town has an affair with someone else in town!
