film reviews from the festival

So, the Fantasy Filmfest is over. In the next days and weeks I plan to give you some reviews about the films I saw. And since I forgot to do that last year, I will do mixed posts with opinions about this and last years tops and flops.

Last years biggest flop was Tales of Earthsea by Miyazaki Jr.. I wont write about it because [livejournal.com profile] frogspace and [livejournal.com profile] sashatwen already ranted about them last summer.

I haven't made up my mind about this years flop yet but even though the short film programm ("Get Shorty") was great (and really bad and boring last year), the two Spanish short films were crap ("Por Que Hay Cosas Que Nunca Se Olvidan" and "Las Horas Muertas").
Why not continue with the shorts to start this review-series? :-)

Shuteye Hotel by Bill Plympton, mediocre, I have seen better work by him. But the idea of a "werepillow" is nice :-)
Lägg M För Mord/Tile M for murder (Sweden) taking playing Scrabble to a whole new and deadly level, good
The Saddest Boy In The World (Canada) the depressing live of a boy told in bright colours, lots of black humor, great!
Occupations (Denmark) by Lars von Trier, very short, very funny. sometimes I would love to do the same when someone annoys me in cinema :-)
Las Horas Muertas/Killing Time (Spain) a group of campers are attacked by a sniper, pointless and boring
Même Les Oiseaux Vont Au Paradis (France) cgi animation film, interesting and funny story about making money with giving sinners a chance to go to heaven and the grim reaper himself. You can view it here (with English subs)
Eater (USA) thrilling and bloddy, ok
Morsure/Bitten (France) zombie tale with great effects, story was ok
Because There Are Things You Never Forget/Por Que Hay Cosas Que Nunca Se Olvidan (Spain) story about the revenge of Italian boys and a nasty old lady who ruins their football game - I guess it's supposed to be funny, but it's not. And boring, too.
Arbeit Für Alle/Work for everyone (Germany) One of the best short films I've seen at the festival yet. Political satire and splatter movie in one. Awesome!
